On Wednesday, October 18, all Bryan County Schools second grade students engaged in the magic of reading with former UGA and NFL star, and now literacy advocate, Malcolm Mitchell. Students enjoyed a fun, dynamic assembly which emphasized the importance and wonders of reading with each student taking home a copy of Malcom’s book, The Magician’s Hat.

Georgia’s State School Superintendent, Richard Woods presented McAllister Elementary with a Literacy Leader Banner for Achievement in Reading. McAllister Elementary was the only elementary school in First District RESA to be awarded the Outstanding Achievement honor. To earn this level of distinction, 90% or more of a school’s third-grade students must be reading at grade level or above based on the 2022-2023 Georgia Milestones scores. Third grade teachers joined Mrs. Heather Tucker, Principal, and Dr. Paul T. Brooksher, Superintendent of Bryan County Schools to accept this banner from State School Superintendent Woods and State School Board Member, Nicholas Ellis.
